SABAH TIMBER INDUSTRY

The timber industry over the past three decades has been the backbone of the State's economy. Its contribution to the State Government revenue is substantial reprensting aobut 40 per cent of the total State Government revenue collected in 1997. In terms of exports, the timber sector plays a pertinent role to the State's export sector.

timber.jpg (5060 bytes)The timber industry in the State is dominated by primary processing of timber. The main wood-based products produced are sawn timber, plywood, veneer, wooden moulding, laminated boards, particle boards and block boards. In 1996, there were 425 timber-based mills recorded in the State. The Government is actively promoting the production higher value added woodbased  products in line with the objectives laid out in State's Industrial Master Plan. Recognising the gradual depletion of forest resources in State, the Government has embarked on various reforestation programmes to ensure sustainable yield of timber resources to supply to its timber industry.
