Dine and Sing at Karamunsing

Karaoke, a form of entertainment where amateur singers sing along with recorded music using a microphone and public address system hit Kota Kinabalu hard in the early 90’s. It became so popular that even private homes have them.

This is actually a very interesting form of entertainment as the music is typically a well-known pop song in which the voice of the original singer is removed or reduced in volume. And then the amateur singer fills in the voice. Some contest participants   actually use this form of entertainment for practicing but most people just use this system to have fun and enjoy themselves.

Now there is an outlet that allows a ‘wannabe’ to sing to his or her heart’s content in a room with just his personal ‘audience’. To boot that, he can have dinner and drinks too.

KKbox is the new karaoke outlet in town that offers food with the entertainment. Located at the ground floor of Complex Karamunsing Block A, this six months old establishment’s concept is mainly for the family.  That is why they have large rooms with comfortable seats and low tables. This is not just a karaoke outlet, even with the food the rooms offered are spacious and the karaoke system is really state-of-the art type.

The screen is large and the room is comfortable. They have 39 units of these comfortable rooms including VIP rooms which are more spacious. All the rooms are actually nicely furnished and they are themed to boot. This is an interesting concept especially if you are a regular. You can have different rooms each time you come in so you don’t feel like you are there all the time. The theme includes traditional, flora and fauna, sports and parks, among many others. They are very attractive.

The general manager of KKBox Alan Lee says the largest room they have can accommodate anything up to 40 people while the smallest can accommodate six people. “However, even if there is only two of you, we will still give you a room,” he says.

For those who love singing, they have 40,000 hit songs to choose from, in various languages such as English, Malay, Chinese, Kadazandusun, Indonesian, Tagalog, and Hindi, among others.  “We are open to the public from 11 am to 1 am,” Lee shares adding that during the weekends however they are opened until 2am.

“For lunch we offer one set lunch with soup and a drink for RM10++, while usage of the rooms are free. Buffet dinner from Monday to Thursday is RM38++ per person. This includes two drinks. And during the weekends, as well as public holidays, the buffet is RM44++ a person and it includes two drinks. All these are inclusive of complimentary karaoke room usage,” he elaborates.

As for the food, Lee says nobody will feel left out as there are 60 varieties of food to choose from. They are Chinese, Malay, Indian, Western and Japanese cuisine.

“We are presently promoting our ‘dine and sing’ outlet to tourists. We hope that tour guides and operators will visit us and make use of our facilities. I am sure they will enjoy our services as they can dine here and enjoy themselves with the karaoke”. “We also invite those who wish to hold a small party for their friends and families to come in and tell us about their needs. We will be ever ready to help,” he says. So if you interested in “Eat all you can and Sing all night long,” sessions, today, walk into KKBox and let your hair down.
