The Food for the Hungry International Sabah (FHI) was launched at the Shangri-La Tanjong Aru Resort on 3rd March 2006 by YB Datuk Dr. Yee Moh Chai, Minister of Resource Development and Information Technology. He said that the services of organizations such as FHI are important to complement the efforts of the government in helping people affected by natural disasters and diseases, as well as the poor.

Datuk Dr. Mechiel Chan, the  founding president for the Food for the Hungry International Malaysia said that members of FHI consider the launch of FHI Malaysia as an auspicious occasion following its registration by the Registrar of Societies as they can now boldly step out and tell everybody that FHI is a group of people who care and want to take action to alleviate the hunger experienced by the poor and less fortunate.

The Food for the Hungry International was founded in 1971 by Dr. Larry Ward to provide special focus on the world's physically and spiritually hungry.
