NEWSLETTER 2-2001/2002

Greetings once again in the La Sallian spirit. How quickly time flies! The biggest event of the year for La Sallians has come and gone (if you missed out on the opportunity to make it for the Annual Dinner, make sure you get your tickets early next year!) and we are already entering the last quarter of the year. So, it's time for yet another edition of the La Sallian newsletter.

LATEST HAPPENINGS

1. Annual Dinner

Here's a brief account of what transpired during this memorable night:

'Reaching Out', a call for La Sallians everywhere to lend a helping hand to those who are less fortunate, became the theme for the Alumni's 40th Annual Dinner. With almost 850 La Sallians turning up, this year's dinner was the biggest and grandest ever. You could see La Sallians from different eras that spanned almost five decades. Long lost friends were rediscovered, new friends were made and current friendships were strengthened. Held at the Magellan Sutera Grand Ballroom on 18 August 2001, it was indeed a joyous sight that this great institution has managed to touch the lives of so many individuals. Graced by His Lordship, the Rt. Reverend Bishop Datuk John Lee, the event kept with the tradition of addressing everyone as "La Sallian" regardless of whether he/she possessed any honorific titles or not. This was to emphasise the oneness of the La Sallian family.

The function kicked off shortly after 7 p.m. Dinner began rather spectacularly with the lights dimming and the servers entering the room, carrying the first dish in candlelight and swaying side to side as the music started playing. Throughout the course of the night, La Sallians were kept entertained by a performance from a group of La Salle students who sang a couple of songs, as well as games that had everyone looking under their tables and chairs for the lucky stickers. You could even see the few people lifting or turning their chairs upside down just to get a better look!

There were also the giving out of souvenirs to the Annual Dinner Organising Committee and the presentation of scholarships for students in the form of mock cheques to both the Sacred Heart Primary School and the La Salle Secondary School by the Association. Then, there was the roll call for classes for each year to find out the class with the biggest turn-out this year. The Class of 1982 won this year's challenge and they were presented with a challenge shield as a sign of recognition for their unity and bond. No doubt, next year will see even hotter competition between the classes to get their class year engraved on the shield.

Towards the end of the dinner, everyone was all ears as the commentator read out the numbers for the lucky draw and the De La Salle College Fund raffles draw. The lucky ones went up on stage to claim their prizes while those of us who were not as lucky, continued to sit and ponder about our near misses. Soon after, it was time to say our good nights and farewells to each other. It was indeed an eventful night and one for all those present to cherish for years to come.

4. The La Salle Archive

The La Salle Archive, which is situated at the Junior Block of the La Salle Secondary School, has been in existence for about 7 years now. It is a place where anything connected to the history of the La Sallian movement in Sabah is carefully stored. A special committee headed by Honorary La Sallian K.J. Joseph, a former teacher in La Salle school, is currently maintaining the archive. Some renovation works are being planned to upgrade the facilities in the archive so as to preserve the La Salle heritage even better. LAUGH-IN CORNER
A man runs into a friend and notices that his car is wrecked and covered with leaves, grass, branches, dirt, and blood. He asks his friend, "What happened to your car?"
"Well," the friend responds, "I ran into a lawyer."
"Okay," says the man, "that explains the blood...but what about the leaves, the grass, the branches, and the dirt?"
"Well, I had to chase him all through the park."

*No lawyers were hurt in the creation of this joke.
