IRC stands for "Internet Relay Chat". It was originally written by Jarkko Oikarinen (jto@tolsun.oulu.fi) in 1988. Since starting in Finland, it has been used in over 60 countries around the world. It was designed as a replacement for the "talk" program but has become much much more than that. IRC is a multi-user chat system, where people convene on "channels" (a virtual place, usually with a topic of conversation) to talk in groups, or privately. IRC is constantly evolving, so the way things to work one week may not be the way they work the next.

IRC gained international fame during the 1991 Persian Gulf War, where updates from around the world came accross the wire, and most irc users who were online at the time gathered on a single channel to hear these reports. IRC had similar uses during the coup against Boris Yeltsin in September 1993, where IRC users from Moscow were giving live reports about the unstable situation there.

The primary chat network that has been selected for JOTI is ScoutLink. This is a special worldwide chat network run by Scouts for Scouts, with security-enforced servers. ScoutLink is considered to be very safe and the conversation on the channels is open, friendly and polite. Although you may find scouts and JOTI-dedicated channels on other chat networks and platforms, we recommend ScoutLink as the place to be in order to take part JOTIs. This will also be the only network where the World JOTI team will be officially present.

In the table below, you can find a list of all ScoutLink IRC servers. This list is being continually being kept up to date and expanded. Please also make a note of the servers IP number, in case the connection to your desired server does not work. You can type in both "/server perth.au.scoutlink.net" or "/server 203.8.107.53" to get connected.

The following is a guide of how you should filled in the boxes for setting up the MIRC programme. Two important items you need to check is the server (For eg. leeuwarden.nl.scoutlink.net) and ports. Others is at your own discreet. For the nicknames, please refer to the Sabah JOTI 2000 page.

• Badge trading is a normal part of Scouting. However, please keep your requests to a minimum and don't annoy everyone who joins the channel. A DCC Chat request would be preferable.
