"St. John Ambulance" which is found in most commonwealth countries was introduced in Sabah in 1952.

Objectives

To recruit, train and maintain volunteers who will respond to accidents and emergencies at short notice.

The organisation also trains, retrains and updates members of the public in first aid and home nursing.

It is also concerned with the development of children, youth and young adults towards training them as good citizens.

In 1972 by an Act of Parliment St. John Ambulance North Borneo became St. John Ambulance Malaysia Sabah. The organisation previously functioning as a District under a District Commissioner was now redesignated as one of the States of Malaysia and the Commissioner was redesignated as State Commander and Chairman under the national council.

In 1952 St. John Ambulance North Borneo was headquartered in Kota Kinabalu town opposite the present state mosque. A building was put up in 1953 from where all activities had taken place.

Several areas such as Sandakan, Lahad Datu, Tawau, Tenom and Kota Belud developed programs and activities at area level. Sandakan and Tawau in particular were active areas where headquarters building were put up and volunteer ambulance services were provided and continues to be provided till today.
