PROGRAMS & ACTIVITIES

In the early years, apart from organising seminars and exhibitions on Child Care and Prevention of Child Abuse, the Association was not able to launch any major project due to financial constraints and lack of manpower.

In 1999 a few key programs were proposed to be annual activities of the Association namely “Kem Cuti Remaja”, “Kempen Kesedaran/Pendidikan Keluarga & Masyarakat Mengenai Kesejahteraan dan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak”, “Lawatan Sambil Belajar” and “Perayaan Hari Kanak-Kanak Sedunia”. The Association carries out most of the yearly programs with the provision of an annual grant from the government obtained through the Sabah Council of Social Services and monies obtained through fund-raising and donations.

The Association plays an active role in several programs and annually organises & coordinates activities for children such as:

Other similar activities, campaigns, forums etc. to study & discuss specific issues on children, are frequently held in collaboration with government agencies, other non-governmental organisations or individuals who share our cause in child welfare & in ending violence against children.

We also make every effort to gather and disseminate or print, publish and circulate information on children on every aspect, in order to create public awareness and encourage more participation in child welfare activities.

Please see our calendar of events for the year.

Career Guidance

The program is meant for youths who are getting ready to leave children’s homes / care centres or who are ready to be discharged from rehabilitation centres. The program aims to help them choose and prepare for the right kind of employment when they leave, and hence to facilitate government monitoring. The program is carried out in collaboration with government and private agencies, as well as other voluntary organisations to improve the welfare of children especially teenage children deemed to be in the high-risk group.

Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR)

The program aims to help the public at large to understand and recognise the special rights of people with special needs in the community. It aims to raise awareness in order to encourage the community to provide better amenities and facilities for people with special needs. It is also an avenue for the physically challenged to show their abilities & capabilities and to demonstrate their skills so that they can be readily accepted by the community.

English Language Enrichment Program

The program is intended for underprivileged or rural children. The aim of the program is to help these children improve their English Language skills, and in addition, to provide guidance on good study habits, methods and discipline. It is hoped that the program will help the children to discover their positive self, raise their confidence and cause them to appreciate the importance of education in shaping one’s self and family towards a brighter future.

Family & Community Awareness Campaign

Such awareness campaigns are held to promote continuous family & community participation in programs and activities that are aimed at child development and the welfare & wellbeing of children in order to create a community that is caring & considerate towards children. The campaigns also encourage voluntary organisations and government agencies to be involved in efforts to prevent and eradicate child abuse and child neglect. In addition, the campaigns promote conformity to the principle advocated by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

In the past, family camps with similar objectives to the Family & Community Awareness projects have been held. Parents and children participated together in the various activities organised at these camps.

The Say Yes for Children/World Fit for Children campaigns are also similar projects.

Health Project for Rural Children

The program is carried out to complement the government’s efforts to ensure that rural children receive essential health benefits and the best medical services in order to reduce incidences of child and infant fatality. It aims to assist the government to extend preventive health care through parental counseling, health education and family health plan services.  The program is carried out in collaboration with government and private agencies, as well as other voluntary organisations to improve the health care plan for rural children.

“Smart & Sharp Mind”

The target group for the program is underprivileged rural school children. The aim of the program is to improve the development of their education especially in school tests and examinations, to encourage parent-teacher cooperation and to educate children and parents about their rights and responsibilities for the development of children’s education.

Study Trips & Outings

The study trips & outings are for underprivileged or rural children as well as children from orphanages or welfare institutions. The children benefit from visiting various places of interest, gaining and exchanging experiences while making new friends and enjoying surroundings that are very unlike the places that they live and stay in. The exposure is hoped to open their minds and motivate them to work harder to achieve their best, increase knowledge, instill considerate behaviour towards one another and towards the community, as well as to learn to care for the environment.

Youth Development Camp

These camps, held during school term breaks, provide an avenue for young children to discover their true self as well as to obtain guidance in developing their aims in life and in planning the strategies to achieve them. The camps also provide opportunities for them to develop and work on their leadership skills, instill considerate behaviour towards one another, as well as to learn to care for the environment. The target group for the camp is young children of good behaviour who have the potential to grow, especially those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
