Short History

The SPIWU as it is called in short, was incepted on 23rd of March 1966. It's members then consisted of bargainable employees from Shell Timur Sdn. Bhd. and ExxonMobil Borneo Sdn. Bhd. formerly known as Esso Borneo Sdn. Bhd. In 1975 it was joined by Sabah Shell Petroleum Company Plc. in the field of crude oil production whereas both EMBSB and STSB were in the areas of petroleum products.

The journey towards a free union was not an easy one then, it still is not today. However the leaders of the past had laid a strong foundation for it's future leaders by means of exposure and training through it's affiliations to the MTUC, ICFTU, ICEM, JILAF, ILO and other national and international trade unions.
